Shridhur Swami Ji was a popular Maratha poet born near the holy city of Pandharpur, two years before Ramdas’ death in 1681. Shridhur is considered to be the most universally popular Maratha poet, as his poetry is accepted and enjoyed by all classes. He wrote for the benefit of the weaker sections, who were uneducated and ignorant of Sanskrit, which was previously the sole repository of learning and knowledge.
Shridhur’s most popular poem is “Rama Vijaya,” an adaptation of the Ramayana story composed in 9147 ovi stanzas. He drew his material from 19 previous Ramayana texts and occasionally added episodes from other sources as well. The poet’s work led to the disappearance of the monopoly of the Pandit, who were the privileged expounders of the Puranic legends.
Shridhur died in 1728 at the age of 60, leaving behind a legacy of popular Marathi literature. He believed that the Almighty had ordained that works should be composed in the Prakrit tongue to quench the thirst of the weaker sections and lead them into the path of salvation. He compared Sanskrit to the wondrous orb of the moon, and Prakrit to its light, which is accessible and understandable to all.
In summary, Shridhur Swami Ji was a popular Maratha poet who wrote for the benefit of the weaker sections and composed the most universally popular Marathi literature. His legacy lives on through his most popular poem, “Rama Vijaya,” which drew from 19 previous Ramayana texts and occasionally added episodes from other sources as well.
